"How to avoid being sued - and what to do if you are"

An examination of the measures necessary to minimise exposure to the commonest causes of litigation affecting architects and the steps to be taken when a dispute occurs.

A legal qualification is not yet necessary to practice architecture - but today a thorough general understanding of how the law affects the practitioner is essential. As the practice of architecture becomes increasingly complex and clients increasingly litigious, a broad view of those aspects of the law with which an architect must be familiar is crucial for senior practitioners.

The seminar will provide a summary of the essential legal structures; illustrate examples of the commonest areas and types of risk; and discuss those building types and forms of construction, which most commonly cause problems. It will suggest ways in which the dangers of being sued for negligence can be minimised. It will also explain, for those unfortunate enough to receive a claim, the stages through which a typical action is likely to proceed and will warn of the pitfalls to avoid.
